Medical charting software
has many benefits (also known as EMR software)
The paperless office concept adoption rate
varies by industry. For clinics and hospitals that are
traditionally bound by multiple layers of legal requirements
regarding their records it took longer than most, but with
the advent of medical charting software that is changing
rapidly.
Medical charting software, also known as
Electronic Medical Record Software (EMR software), is
essentially a digital version of the folders and files that
have traditionally required a large medical records section
in any medical facility. By shrinking the normally extensive
library of paperwork into a computer network (which
virtually all medical facilities already have) the office
can recover previously used space and put it to productive
use. Paper backups can still be kept, but they no longer
need to be in close proximity to the reception/wait room
area. In many instances, medical charting software also
works with a
medical billing software program to share information
between the two programs.
In addition it is not only feasible, but
advisable to have off-site digital backups. Medical charting
software allows this to be accomplished with nothing more
than an external hard drive. Imagine the difficulty and cost
in duplicating an entire medical filing system for the
purposes of keeping a up to date secure copy off site. More
complex and automated backup solutions also exist for
offices concerned about theft or natural disasters.
Add to that the extra space recovered by the
lack of charts being used in most areas of the office and
the additional free space increases even more. Office
shredder will probably last a lot longer but office
suppliers might be a little upset that they’re not selling
nearly as much paper as you used to.
Due to having the records stored
electronically, the amount of time needed for the medical
charting software to pull up a record is probably less time
than it takes for a staff member to blink their eye. If a
given clinic sees 100 patients a day and it takes a staff
member an average of 20 seconds to find the proper folder
and prepare it, then more than half an hour of highly paid
staff time is wasted every single day. Add to that the
amount of time that it takes a staff member to return the
files, and that figure can exceed an hour a day per 100
patients.
Some offices may hold reservations about
security and cybercrime. All the while their records are
often kept out in the open where any staff member can open
any file at any time, and if the records area is unattended
so can a snoopy patient. The fact of the matter is that
digital records can be encrypted with various levels of
password protection and logging. These features help keep
patient records private in a way that folders simply cannot.
Prescription pad can also be "stolen" from a medical office
and used by forgers; however electronic prescriptions ALWAYS
are recorded in the chart and can be traced back to the
patient that received the prescription, no matter where in
the country they purchased the medications.
Another benefit of medical record software
is that the patient chart is easily accessible by EVERYONE
in the office and even MULTIPLE staff members AND it can be
instantly found or accessed, think of it, no more running
around looking for misplaced or lost charts!
Physicians will also love the fact that lab
reports are automatically routed to the correct chart, no
more misfiled labs in the wrong chart!
